Visiting Lecturer: Exploring Smart Crime Prevention Strategies with the Basic Crime Triangle

On Tuesday, November 14, 2023, in the Auditorium Room of Building I8 at FISH UNESA, students from the Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences, particularly those in the 2020 cohort with a criminal concentration and the 2021 cohort of the Law Science undergraduate program, organized a guest lecture in collaboration with the Department of Police and Security from Saekyung University, presented by Mr. Shin Sungshik, Ph.D. On this occasion, Prof. Yoonsook-Shim, serving as the President of Saekyung University, was also in attendance.
The guest lecture focused on discussing crimes in Indonesia and their prevention efforts. According to the presentation, the concept of the Basic Crime Triangle was introduced, comprising three strategies to prevent crimes:
Preventing or avoiding perpetrators by installing security systems or hiring guards at homes. This method can reduce the risk of crime by preventing criminals from approaching the area.
General prevention strategies that instill fear in potential criminals during the commission of a crime. There must be a correlation between the level of crime and violence (or rigidity, balance, certainty) and the speed of punishment, which will affect the overall crime rate.
Specific prevention strategies involve imposing heavy penalties on criminals, making them afraid to repeat their offenses.
